I'm still at it. Phase 2 of 4 (or 5, I like to leave room for last minute inspiration) complete. Next up is the yoke which will continue up and end with a pattern and braiding. Then, the finishing touches!
A lot of people have asked me about the inspiration behind these pieces and sometimes I don't have a good answer. Sometimes I let the 'thing' build itself and learn from it. I do know that for this series my Scandinavian roots gave me the platform in which to assume this venture. It was here that I started my quest and with out it nothing would be possible. "Falling starlight, a night sky and rain." Crocheted brass wire with black aura Quartz crystals pendent on hand braided necklace. I don't really make Jewlery but this one came to me in a dream to pair with a wire crocheted vest I've also dreamed about and am now procuring the materials for it. 🌿
This 'box' is actually a sort of crude piston. With handles on either side, you pull the drawer out, but inside an elastic cord provides resistance and when released, closes the drawer. It is both playful and slightly frustrating.
"Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return." Leonardo da Vinci
To summon inspiration I like to construct small objects - I usually describe them as boxes because they end up being used as a vessel of some sort or another. This "box" stands 3" and is one of a series of six. Each one is hollow containing a stone from the Pacific Northwest, so when you shake it, it rattles! They are made from wood and layer upon layer upon layer of charcoal powder producing that 'surface of the moon' like texture. I love how dense charcoal makes everything feel - it is one of my all time favorite mediums.
My contribution to my husbands Icelandic magic stave book; a photo I took while on the Snæfellsnes peninsula and a stave said to link oneself with the power and knowledge of the soul. *To bind yourself fast to the power of your own soul, draw these staves on blessed parchment and keep them with you always. ⭐️🌙🌞 |
